When I came around afte the operation it was about 2:30pm and I was in the post op room. A nurse was chatting away to me. I asked how long the op had taken - she said it was about 80 minutes. I had now recovered enough to be wheeled back to my room where I must have lay for about an - not feeling any real pain, but recovering from the anaesthetic.
About 4pm they brought me some painkillers, something to eat and drink and told me to have a sleep. At this point they were talkng about maybe keeping me in overnight because I was still apparently so sleepy. They turned the light out and left me alone - and then about 6pm the physio came in to see if I was okay. He said that I needed to be able to walk, etc, before going home so I could have a go then, or he could come back. I told him that I'd get up and have a walk then, so that was that - I got out of bed and very groggily hobbled along the corridor and up and down a small flight of about 10 stairs. My left knee was sore - my right knee was REALLY sore. The physio told me that the anaesthetic injected into my knees at the end of the op was probably starting to wear off. He was happy with my movement though so he told me that if the nurse was okay with things, I could go. I rang Rob - within an hour I was back home. That's 48 hours ago and since then I've pretty much lay in bed, lay on the settee, and not much else. For the first 24 hours (i.e yesterday) my right knee was just throbbing and I couldn't get comfy. The left knee is uncomfortable but okay - but until I see Mr.Pradhan next week I'm not clear exactlyhow much repair work he has done on my right knee. I'm doing all the static quad stuff that I'm supposed to do every couple of hours - but it's difficult on my right leg as it is sore. I'm taking more drugs than Lance Armstrong (Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and Codeine) and tonight is the first time where I've felt that I can get comfortable. Both nights I've not been able to just fall asleep - probably a mix of anaesthetic and discomfort - and have dropped off about 5am both mornings, resulting in dozing thoughout yesterday and today. I'm just about to get a shower and something to eat - and then hopefully will sleep okay tonight. I can't drive for two weeks - due to risk of emergency stop with dodgy knee - and I have a sick note for two weeks. I start physio next Wednesday and take it from there.
